Jones pleased to get campaign back on track

Eddie Jones says he is happy with England’s performance levels as a 33-0 win against Italy got their Six Nations campaign (England 6/1 Outright) up and running.

It was a disappointing opening last week as England were defeated by arch-rivals Scotland which saw them lose the Calcutta Cup, for the second successive year, at Murrayfield.

The Red Rose were expected to win against usual whipping boys Italy and they didn’t disappoint as the 33-0 win secured a bonus point for Jones’ side.

Fly-half Marcus Smith, widely regarded as one of the hottest properties in the sport, was instrumental as England ran in five unanswered tries.

He crossed the line early in the first half while hooker Jamie George went over twice to help England secure a 21-0 lead at the break.

Italy did show spirit in the second half but, ultimately, England had far too much quality as Elliot Daly and Kyle Sinckler completed the routine win.

Jones was content with the quality his side showed at the Stadio Olimpico ahead of their first home match of the tournament against Wales on February 26.

“It was a good performance,” said the Australian. “We started the game well, got a bit of a flow, started the second half well, and defended well at the end.

“Italy are a tough team and they keep coming. If we were a bit tidier with some of our work, some running lines, it could have been a big score. We are happy with that, now we move on to Wales.

“They (Italy) have played New Zealand and France and in the first halves been in the game – and they were not in the game today.”
