Champions League Odds: Nagelsmann sticking to principles

Julian Nagelsmann

Bayern Munich (Champions League outright 4/1) boss Julian Nagelsmann says he is will not change his attacking approach to games despite their leaky defence.

Bayern face a short trip to Austria to play RB Salzburg (Match betting – RB Salzburg 13/2, draw 9/2, Bayern Munich 4/11) in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie on Wednesday evening.

The Bavarian side are expected to perform strongly and are regarded as one of the teams who can win the competition, two years on from their triumph against PSG.

However, in recent times they have come under scrutiny for their defensive frailties with Naglesmann’s men keeping only one clean sheet in their last five games.

Four goals were conceded in the first half at the weekend away at Bochum as they were beaten 4-2 and while they still have a fairly comfortable six-point cushion at the top of the table, they have now lost two of their last five domestically.

Goalscoring has been no issue with Bayern netting 70 in 22 Bundesliga games, while they scored 22 in six group matches as they stormed to a 100 per-cent record.

Ahead of the trip to Salzburg, where it is 10/11 there will be Over 3.5 goals scored, Nagelsmann says he is not going to compromise on his attacking philosophy, even though it is leading to goal concessions.

“My philosophy, my approach, I’m not going to change that,” he said. “There’s a certain structure in our squad, even though there are some players missing.

“The funny thing about football is that these discussions only come up when you’re losing. In our win over RB Leipzig, we had one less defender than we did in the defeat to Bochum, but somehow everyone said we were too offensive against Bochum.

“In the end, it’s all about the way you play, not the system. I’m not going to change my approach based on what the media writes about us.”
