Betfred Super League Odds: Saints seal statement win

St Helens (2/1 Grand Final Winner) laid down a marker in their opening Betfred Super League game of 2022, beating Catalans Dragons (11/2) 28-8 at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

In a repeat of last season’s Grand Final, Saints and Catalans renewed their rivalry to bring up the curtain on the 2022 campaign.

Catalans landed the first blow when Fouad Yaya crossed but Saints battled back to lead 16-8 by half time after two Tommy Makinson tries and scores from James Roby and Lewis Dodd.

The second half was heated and the sending off of Dylan Napa left Catalans up against it as they tried to force their way back into proceedings.

Saints made full use of the man advantage with Joey Lussick and Konrad Hurrell scoring to round off a successful evening.

St Helens head coach Kristian Woolf said: “It’s Round 1, so you can’t get too excited. There is a lot of footy to be played, but it gives us a lot of confidence.

“I said before the game we were in a good position to attack the season and I think we showed that tonight.”

There are a further two games scheduled in the Betfred Super League on Friday as Castleford Tigers host Salford Red Devils (Match Betting – Castleford Tigers 1/4, Draw 22/1, Salford Red Devils 10/3) and Wigan Warriors travel to Hull KR (Match betting – Hull KR 6/4, Draw 20/1, Wigan Warriors 8/13).

KR head coach Tony Smith instilled a philosophy that led the club to the playoffs last season and they were just 80 minutes from reaching the Grand Final.

Smith has vowed to stick to those principals this campaign as the Humberside look to go one better in 2022.

“We have to earn the right to be part of those really exciting games,” Smith told BBC Sport.

“There’s no doubt we want to win games. We don’t just go out there and throw the ball around and see what happens.

“There’s more to it than that, but it’s really important to us to perform well and entertain.”
