Wind wreaks havoc in Florida

After torrential rain over the first couple of days, strong winds made scoring conditions extremely difficult on Saturday at The Players Championship as England’s Tommy Fleetwood (12/1 – Outright Winner) remains in a tie for the lead on -6.

Normally when a PGA Tour event gets to Sunday there would be just 18 holes remaining for each player, however, there are still several players yet to start their second rounds and the rescheduled Monday finish could potentially be extended to Tuesday.

While the rain eventually eased up on Saturday and some golf was possible, the wind kicked up to around 30-35mph and this made for treacherous playing conditions, especially at the par-three 17th hole which is an island green surrounded by water.

A total of 29 balls found the drink at the 17th on Saturday, compared to just four over the first two days, and this hole accounted for some very high scores and ended numerous players’ chances of making the cut.

The Players Championship Betting Odds

World number 49 Fleetwood only managed three holes of his second round before darkness brought an end to Saturday’s action, with the Englishman still tied for the lead on -6 alongside American Tom Hoge, who is yet to tee off for his second set of 18 and is 16/1 to win the tournament.

Joaquin Niemann (14/1) will return to the first green on Sunday with an 11-foot putt for a par, having only been able to hit three shots of his second round, as he sits on -5 and just one stroke off the pace.

Keith Mitchell and Anirban Lahiri are also on -5 and the duo will hope to start their second rounds on Sunday, while Will Zalatoris is one-under through three holes of his second round to sit on -4 overall.

The American is joined on that mark by no less than eight other players, these being Doug Ghim, Kramer Hickok, Brian Harman, Sam Burns (18/1), Abraham Ancer, Taylor Pendrith, Cameron Smith (11/1) and Harold Varner III.

While the wind is expected to drop markedly on Sunday, temperatures are expected to be very cold and this could make life harder with the ball not travelling as far.
