Tomkins excited by Dragons’ chances

Catalans Dragons star Sam Tomkins says he cannot wait for the 2022 Betfred Super League campaign to get underway, and he claims his side are better equipped than they were 12 months ago (St Helens 4/11, tie 20/1, Catalans 5/2 – Match winner).

The French outfit (6/1 – To win the Grand Final) managed to win the League Leaders’ Shield in 2021 but fell at the final hurdle as they lost in the Grand Final, their first since they joined the Super League.

Steve McNamara’s men were narrowly beaten at Old Trafford, but the former England coach has decided to stay put in the south of France after signing a new deal.

Even though they lost Joel Tomkins and James Maloney in the off-season, Catalans signed Mitchell Pearce, Dylan Napa and Tyrone May from the NRL.

Tomkins believes all three will cause problems during the next eight months, starting with Thursday’s opening game of the new season against champions St Helens.

He told Serious About Rugby League: “I think we’re stronger, before the singings, I think what improved us was we have a lot of young players that gained valuable experience last year.

“The three singings are all very good – the club has done really well and worked really hard to get those three.”

St Helens (9/4 – To win the Grand Final) start the new campaign looking for a fourth straight title, something no club has ever achieved.

Sione Mata’utia and Mark Percival are back in the squad after missing last week’s pre-season friendly against Leigh Centurions, but Regan Grace sits out with a bicep issue. Catalans duo Ben Garcia and Julian Bousquet also return, having missed the recent friendly success over Toulouse.
