Field showing no sign of nerves

Wigan Warriors full-back Jai Field says he is relishing the chance to play in his first Betfred Challenge Cup final this weekend, as his side prepares to face Huddersfield Giants at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (Huddersfield 11/5, Draw 18/1, Wigan 4/11 – Match Result).

The Australian has never played in a final, but he will hope to help Wigan make history this weekend as they try to win their first Challenge Cup since 2013.

Ian Watson’s Huddersfield stand in their way, and Saturday’s showpiece could be the start of a huge weekend for the town, with Huddersfield Town FC in action in the Championship play-off final on Sunday.

Wigan recorded a shock 20-18 victory over St Helens to reach the final, while the Giants outclassed Hull KR in a 25-4 success.

Only one point separates the two sides in the Betfred Super League table, and despite the pressure and media attention, Field (8/11 Anytime Try Scorer) says he is excited about the occasion.

He told Love Rugby League: “It is a big occasion. It is my first Challenge Cup campaign, and we’ve been lucky enough to make the final, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and enjoying it.

“It is such a big competition. There is no knockout competition like this at all in Australia, so you soon realise once you get into this country how big of a competition it is for the players. I’m definitely looking forward to it.

“It has been really enjoyable. The uniqueness of it and the build-up of each game is like nothing I’ve done before in Australia, so it has been good. It has gone away from Wembley for one year, and we are lucky enough to play in that game, so it is nice to play there (at Spurs).

“I’ve seen a few photos of them putting the goalposts up, so I’m excited to get out there.”

James Child has been confirmed as the referee of Saturday’s final for the first time in his career. Jack Smith and Jonny Roberts will be touch judges for the game, while Chris Kendall has been named as the video referee.
