Chelsea have joined fellow English sides Manchester City and Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after an emphatic 2-1 win in Lille and 4-1 victory on aggregate on Wednesday.
The Blues continued the defence of their title, and travelled to France with a 2-0 lead on aggregate after the first leg at Stamford Bridge but Burak Yilmaz got Lille back into the tie, scoring from the spot not long before half time.
Christian Pulisic restored Chelsea’s two goal advantage on aggregate with a super finish seconds before the break. Jorginho, who’s handball gave the penalty away, played the American in with a clever pass, and the former Dortmund man did the rest. A huge goal for the Blues.
Lille pressed and probed second half and they went close again – Xeka’s header hit the post after a great cross in from Yilmaz.
However, Cesar Azpilicueta got on the end of Mason Mount’s cross to give Chelsea the lead on the night and seal the deal for the Blues.
Despite progessing through to the next round, Chelsea have drifted to 8/1 from 7/1 to win this year’s Champions League behind 2/1 Man City, 3/1 Liverpool and 7/2 Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile in Turin, Villarreal stunned Juventus to progress to the quarter-finals.
This tie looked like it could go either way after the stalemate in the first leg in Spain.
The game in Italy was also a tightly contested affair until the deadlock was broken by Gerard Moreno from the penalty spot 12 minutes from time.
Pau Torres doubled the lead not long after, and Arnaut Danjuma scored a second Villarreal penalty to send The Old Lady packing.
