Cancelo delighted with City extension

Pep Guardiola

Joao Cancelo says there is “nowhere better to play football” and he is “incredibly happy” to have signed a new two-year contract extension with Manchester City (1/9 – Premier League Outright).

Portugal international Cancelo arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2019 in a six-year deal worth £27.4 million that included Danilo being sent to Juventus in part-exchange, equating to £60m, making him the most expensive right-back ever.

After struggling to adapt to the Premier League to begin with, the 27-year-old has been an integral part of the first-team since the 2020/21 season under Pep Guardiola (pictured), making a total of 50 appearance since the start of that campaign.

The Portuguese defender has helped City climb to the top of the standings this term, as they hold a nine-point gap over Liverpool (6/1 – Premier League Outright) in second, and he remains on course to clinch his second league title with the Citizens.

Cancelo’s form has earned him a new two-year contract extension and he expressed his delight after the news was confirmed, telling the club’s official website: “Manchester City is a fantastic club, so I am incredibly happy to have signed this new agreement.

“City players have everything they need to reach their full potential, with amazing facilities, world-class teammates and an incredible manager who pushes us every single day.

“There is nowhere better to play football and it’s a pleasure to work here. I have so much I want to achieve before my career ends, and Manchester City offers me the best chance of fulfilling my ambitions.”

City are back in action on Saturday when they welcome Championship leaders Fulham to the Etihad for FA Cup fourth-round action.

Guardiola’s men are 1/8 to pick up the win, while the draw is priced 7/1 and the Cottagers are 16/1 to cause an upset.
